Don Couchie and the Spirit of Bluegrass

traditional bluegrass in Ontario since 1972

Don Couchie - Guitar, vocals

Don's first love was the guitar and started playing bluegrass in 1970. Since then played for a number of bluegrass bands all over Ontario and the northeastern United States. Besides guitar, Don is very much at home on the banjo and violin.

Bill Vickers - Mandolin, vocals

Big Bill's first job playing bluegrass was with White Birch Bluegrass in 1975 and later he was one of the members of The Taylor Family. Bill's playing is a great example of what bluegrass music is all about.

Peter Atkins - Banjo

Pete is well known for his dazzling and brilliant banjo performances. His lightning fast speed and crystal clear & clean picking have awed audiences for many years.

Jimmy Young - Violin/fiddle

Hearing Jimmy on the violin is a rare treat you won't soon forget. He hails from a country music background and can make his fiddle fill your heart with sadness, joy and happiness - he is a true virtuoso.

Laura Reid - bass

Laura has been playing the bass since she was a junior in grade school. Her love of bluegrass music was inherited from her dad, Don Couchie, so it's no great surprise that she became a treasured member of the Spirit of Bluegrass.

Hans Moratt - guitar, mandolin

Hans is the newest member of the group. His distinctive tenor voice and solid rhythm guitar make for a most valued addition to the band.
